Blauw

Deze is gemaakt voor de groep Artquilts around the world. De opdracht was werken in 1 kleur.
De basis is gemaakt van verschillende stoffen die uit eenzelfde verfemmer verschillend tevoorschijn kwamen. Daaroverheen heb ik met donkerblauwe verf gesjabloneerd. Het quilten is gedaan met verschillende kleuren blauw. Daarna heb ik oa geverfde muslin en een stuk van een oude sjaal er op gezet.
I dyed lots of different fabrics in a bucket. They came out in different shades of blue. I patched them together and then applied paint with a selfmade template. I started quilting by machine following the painted pattern using different threads. Then amongst other things I put on pieces of lightblue muslin and part of an old scarf.

I have been experimenting with old dye techniques, in particular clamping.
For this project I used a blue dye. To clamp I used several objects, even some hairpins I borrowed!

 To finish it, I used new threads and beads.

Paris and earrings

A couple of weeks ago I went to an exhibition in a museum in The Hague. It was about Paris, city of modern art in1900-1960. Back then, when you were an artist, Paris was the place to be.
So my another place is Paris, where art changed and became more abstract.
The picture of the eiffeltower (1926) made by Robert Delaunay was resized on the computer before a copy was made. Then the copy was crumbled to make the paper more soft. Then it was ironed onto vlieseline.
So putting in paper was easy... My new technique was using plastic, and honestly: I dont think it was a great idea. Then machinequilting, and I added some paint. I am not totally done with it, but running out of time.

These earrings I made with the fabrics from Guatemala. 

Next year I hope to finish more of these small projects. And complete some of my large projects... :-)

Barcelona

One of Barcelona's famous artists is Antoni Tapies (see here) who has his own museum in Barcelona. He  uses nature, coincidence, and thinking about coincidence. For example he used a lot of sand and sawdust mixed with paint on his canvas and this layer once dried up will burst. He painted with a wide variety of materials including cardboard, cloths, paper, threads.

So Tapies became my Barcelona inspiration, but there is so much more in Barcelona, it is so hard to choose. One of the famous buildings in Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia, a church  they started building  in 1882, and it is still not finished. So some of that, and some mosaics and some summer colors...

I started with an old cloth, and put a sleeve of a shirt on it. Accidental materials who just happen to be here. Then I used gesso and yellow paint and with a selfmade stencil I applied rectangles in red. (This is seen on my first blog about Barcelona.) Then I did some more stencilling in blue and painted  with red and brown. In the right corner I glued a piece of paper from the museum of Antoni Tapies, in pieces like mosaic.On the left I cut off a big piece and put it back on upside down. 

I used thin batting and quilted with graded pink-red thread.

In the left corner I made a black cross from black wool.

late start

Deze zomer gaan de dagen wel erg snel. Net terug van vakantie en ben nu pas gestart met de Barcelona quilt. Elke dag een beetje en hopen dat het volgens plan gaat.
It's been summer (sort of) and days flew by. So I just started my Barcelona  quilt (will it be a quilt? I dont know yet). Here a glimpse of what I am doing.

Met deze quilt ben ik begonnen op de workshop van Cas Holmes die ik in januari heb gevolgd. Ik ben verder gegaan met in gedachte de uitdaging van Artquiltsaroundtheworld, waarbij je je favoriete kleur niet mocht gebruiken. Om eens wat anders te doen. Dus hierbij geen blauw. Verschillende materialen zijn gebruikt, waaronder (kranten)papier. Ik heb zelfgemaakte stempels gebruikt, en acryl verf en inkt. Het geheel is machinaal doorgequilt en de randen zijn met de hand afgewerkt. Afmeting is 32 bij 69 cm.

This quilt started in January when I attended a workshop given by Cas Holmes. To be different I was not using blue, my favorite color. I used various materials including paper. Most of it was old. I used selfmade stamps, acrylic paint and ink. After I made my top it was machinequited and finished with a handstitch around the edges. My 'Different' quilt has a different size: 32 x 69 cm.

In januari heb ik bij Zijdelings een workshop gevolgd van Cas Holmes. Erg leuk en inspirerend. Ik heb daar een begin gemaakt voor de uitdaging van artquilts around the world. De bedoeling was deze keer om eens iets anders te doen, niet je favoriete kleur te gebruiken. Inmiddels ben ik klaar, een maand te vroeg! Geen blauw gebruikt, in een andere formaat dan gewoonlijk en oa met papier erin. Meer dan een klein stuk laat ik nu niet zien, eind maart pas.

Verder ben ik bezig met krimpstof. Ga je na het doorquilten eerst wassen en dus krimpen, of ga je eerst verven? Ik heb het eerst laten krimpen en weet nu dat ik minder intensief moet doorquilten, of het meer moet afwisselen met losser gequilte stukken.

In January I attended a workshop at Zijdelings given by Cas Holmes. It was very inspiring. I started my Artquiltsaroundtheworld challenge there. It had to be 'different' and not using your favorite color. In my case that woud be blue. So there is no blue in my quilt and something else which is rather different apart from its size is: it is already finished! Cant show it yet though, have to wait till the end of March. So here just a peek.

I started to quilt with shrinkmaterial. I quilted first and then washed it (which made it shrink) but I could have painted it first before shrinking. What would you do?

zelfportret

Dit is mijn resultaat voor de groep ArtQuilts around the world, waarbij de opdracht was een zelfportret te maken. Nu had ik dat net afgelopen zomer al gedaan voor Tegendraads, dus heb ik besloten dezelfde foto te gebruiken maar dan een andere techniek. De foto heb ik in een paar stukken geknipt (haar, gezicht, arm, trui) en dat weer uit foam geknipt. De foamstukken heb ik gebruikt om een afdruk te maken (in het haar heb ik dat drie keer gedaan met verschillende kleuren). Het roze gedeelte heb ik met de kwast gedaan.

Daarna quilten in kleur en afgewerkt met een bies die je naar achter omslaat zodat je aan de voorkant niets ziet. (met dank aan Wietske)

Having just made a selfportret this summer for another group I was not jumping to make another one. But then I thought of making the same thing different. So I used the same photograph and used a different technique. And I might just make more of the same ;-)

I forgot to make pictures while doing this, as it came down to a very much last minute effort. I cut the potograph in several pieces, and then cut those pieces from foam. I used these foam pieces to make a print using fabric paint. The pink surroundings were just painted with a brush.

The quilting was kept simple (but I do have to do something with my machine as the thread broke several times, not funny when you are in a hurry, actually never funny)

stone soup

Nadat ik alle 15 stukken aan elkaar heb gezet, heb ik stof geverfd in de kleuren steenrood en paars, de twee kleuren die ook in mijn batik voorkomen. Van die stoffen een rand gemaakt en toen het geheel gedubbeld en eenvoudig doorgequilt. Er zijn nl sommige stukken die al zijn doorgequilt en er is ook een stuk met veel kraaltjes waar ik al twee naalden op gebroken heb, alleen al met het aan elkaar vastzetten. Hier en daar wil ik nog wel met verschillende kleuren draad wat steken erop maken, maar misschien blijft ie ook wel zo.

After connecting al 15 pieces (and broke two needles), I dyed some fabric in the colors purple and brick-red, the colors I also used in my batik. The fabric was used to make the border. The quilting was kept simple. I would like to make some extra stitches here and there with different colors but maybe it will stay like this.

Stone soup

Dit zijn de stukjes die ik uit Australie heb gekregen om een nieuwe quilt van te maken.

Een dag te laat, maar hier dan de hele stone soup. Meer fotoos staan op de site van ArtQuiltsAoundtheWorld, waar iedereen laat zien wat ze met de originele foto hebben gedaan. Alle werkstukken zijn naar 1 adres gestuurd waar ze in stukken worden geknipt en dan krijgen we allemaal verschillende stukken terug waar we weer 1 geheel van gaan proberen te maken.

A day too late, but here is my Stone soup. More pictures are on the AQAtW blog where everybody shows their soup. It was all sent to one person, who will cut it up. We will all get different pieces back to make a new top. So this will be continued.

poppys

This little quilt I made for Art quilts around the world.
I had done something like this before. (see here)
This time I made it a bit larger and three poppy's instead of one. The silk got its color from a dye bath as I am doing a lot of fabricdying (it is great to see how different fabrics react in the same bath). The stitching was done again with brown thread.
Size is almost 12 inch by close to 15 inch.
